چکیده

Regarding some reported antimicrobial properties of tannins; Zymomonas mobilis was used to obtain ethanol from tannin-reduced carob pod extract (TR-CPE). Culture of 50 ml volume containing 7.5 g sugar at pH 5.5 and 0.03 g bacterial inoculums with shaking at 80 rpm was used. Using response surface methodology (RSM), the maximum ethanol concentration of 5.34 % w/v (higher than that reported earlier, 4.01% w/v) was obtained at the optimized addition levels of yeast extract, peptone, and fermentation time; 0.13 g, 0.62 g, and 43.78 h, respectively. Carob pods extract (CPE) containing 62.23gl 1 sugar was treated with 3 gl gelatin to decrease its tannin content by 57.87 %. Sugar loss was not observed during gelatin treatment. The results revealed that there was no significant difference in ethanol production, yield, and productivity between TR-CPE and non-TR-CPE. In conclusion, tannin showed no inhibiting effect to maximum ethanol production by Zymomonas mobilis.

Fuel Ethanol Production from Carob Pod

There is a growing interest worldwide to find out new and cheap carbohydrate sources for production of bioethanol. In this work, carob pod (Ceratonia Siliqua) is proposed as an economical source for ethanol production, especially, in arid regions. The carob tree is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region, cultivated for its edible seed pods and it is currently being reemphasised a...

Effects of extracts derived from pistachio by-products on ruminal fermentation and methane production

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses of pistachio by-product (PBP) extracts supplemented with alfalfa hay (AH) or barley grain (BG) on microbial fermentation in an in vitro fermentation system. The total extracted phenolic compounds were 36.96, 65.78, 67.02 and 8.85% and total extracted tannin contents were 37.11, 59.64, 56.87 and 7.55% when PBP was extract...

استفاده از عصاره محصول فرعی پسته استخراج شده با حلال‌های مختلف به منظور کاهش تجزیه‌پذیری شکمبه‌ای پروتئین کنجاله کلزا

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses of pistachio by-products (PBP) extracts on the protein protection from ruminal degradability in canola meals. PBP were extracted by four different solvents, i.e. 70% ethanol, 80% methanol, a mixture of chloroform and methanol, and water. Then, an in situ trial was conducted to determine ruminal degradability and disappea...

Antiproliferative effects of Ceratonia siliqua L. on mouse hepatocellular carcinoma cell line.

Extracts from pods and leaves of carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) were tested for their ability to inhibit cell proliferation of mouse hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (T1). The two extracts showed a marked alteration of T1 cell proliferation in a dose-related fashion reaching the maximal effect at 1 mg/ml. Moreover, we demonstrated that leaf and pod extracts were able to induce apoptosis in T1 c...
